Our
first stop was Nairobi where we stayed at the Norfolk Hotel visited the Karen
Blixen home, the Giraffe Center and Utamaduni Crafts Center. We
spent two days game-viewing at Amboseli National Park and the adjacent Masai tribal
lands in southern Kenya. We climbed Mt. Kilimanjaro (19,340 ft.) going up
the 6-day Machame route. We then visited northern Tanzania's three most famous wildlife parks, twice-daily
game-viewing drives in the Serengeti,. an entire day inside the wildlife-filled Ngorongoro
Crater, and a visit to Lake Manyara National Park. We also
toured the fossil beds of Olduvai Gorge,
Dr. Leakey's famed site that established the Great Rift Valley as the
"cradle of mankind".

Arrive in Zurich today, and rest in dayroom untilevening
departure to Nairobi.

Day 3, Tues: Nairobi, Kenya
Arrive in Kenya's capital and
transfer to one of Africa's most distinguished hotels, the Norfolk. For nearly
100 years, the Norfolk has presided over Nairobi's growth from a small railway
depot to an international city, and has hosted nearly all of the city's most
prominent guests. After lunch, review the events ahead at a safari briefing,
then learn more about Kenya on a Safari visiting the Karen Blixen home, Giraffe
Center, and an Ostrich Farm. Shop if you wish at Utamaduni Crafts Center, then
conclude the day with a delicious welcome dinner in town.

Days 4-5, Wed-Thurs: Amboseli National Park
Venture south on Wednesday to Amboseli, with the snowy peak of Mt.
Kilimanjaro looming in the distance as you arrive at your secluded luxury camp.
Here you begin to experience the real Africa, sleeping under canvas and
awakening to spectacular views, before setting off to explore on foot or by
vehicle the herds inhabiting both Amboseli Park and the Masai tribal lands just
outside. Return from your game-viewing outings to enjoy the camp's quiet
setting, and glorious sunsets from your large private verandah.

Day 6, Fri..: Arusha, Tanzania/Mountain Base
Arrive in Arusha and transfer to your accommodations at the mountain base to
prepare for tomorrow's ascent.

Day 7, Sat.: Mount Kilimanjaro Ascent
Depart early to Machame village, and begin trek through shambas, forest
and along a scenic ridge to your hut at 9,800 feet.

Hike today through valleys, streams, a river gorge and moorlands to your hut
at Shira Plateau (at 12,500 feet). Enjoy magnificent views of Kibo Peak
and the Western Breach.

Day 9, Mon.: Mount Kilimanjaro Ascent
Turn east and continue ttrek through the alpine desert landscape, before
descending along an immense canyon to camp amid the groundsels and
waterfalls of Barranco Valley (at 13,100 feet).

The vegetation thins and then disappears altogether as you cross through
screes, ridges and the Karangu Valley to camp (at 15,500 feet).

Day 11, Wed.: Mount Kilimanjaro Summit
Leave before sunrise for final ascent on an awesome ridge between
Rebmann and Ratzel glaciers up to the rim of the crater between Stella and Hans
Meyer Points. From here it is another hour along the snowy crater rim to Uhuru
Peak (at 19,340 feet), before descending to Gillman's Point and your camp.

Day 12, thur.: Mount Kilimanjaro Descent - Arusha
Descend to the park gate, where you continue to base hotel for
dinner and overnight.

Days 13-14, Fri.-Sat.: Serengeti National Park, Tanzania
After breakfast, depart to Arusha airport for a scenic flight to the
world-famous Serengeti. Here you are immediately transported to a world of big
game and natural beauty unique to the Great Rift Valley. During your two days in
this vast, game-filled plain, morning and afternoon game-runs reveal the Africa
of your dreams: endless savannas with herds of gazelle, wildebeest, zebra and
antelope; great opportunities for spotting leopard, cheetah and one of Africa's
largest lion populations; countless other discoveries. During the annual
migration, over a million animals roam the park in a magnificent spectacle, but
at any time of year the game-viewing is outstanding.

Days 15-16, Sun.-Mon.: Ngorongoro Crater
From the open plains of the Serengeti, depart to the self-contained wildlife
haven of the Ngorongoro Crater, stopping en route at Olduvai Gorge. Here the
Leakeys stunned the scientific world with their famous discoveries of ancient
tools and the earliest known human remains. From your lodge at the Crater rim,
enjoy thrilling views of the great basin below, where some 35,000 mammals reside
on the 120-square-mile crater floor. On Saturday, a full day in this unspoiled
wilderness will offer up-close viewing and photography of nearly every animal
species to be found in East Africa, except giraffe who are unable to negotiate
the steep climb. Two thousand feet above, you'll return to fine dining, a cozy
fire and exciting memories of your day.

Day 17, Tue: Lake Manyara National Park
Depart after breakfast to Lake Manyara National Park. Though compact in size,
the park encloses an amazing diversity of habitats. Explore the towering fig and
mahogany forests where a profusion of monkeys and the famous tree-climbing lions
are found. The beautiful lake and marshes are teeming with exotic birds, and the
open savannas are roamed by huge herds of elephants, buffalo, giraffes and
herbivores. At day's end retire your lodge, set on spectacular cliffs
overlooking the Rift Valley below.

Day 18, Wed: Arusha - Nairobi, Kenya
Begin your journey back to Kenya this morning. Arrive for lunch in Arusha, the
safari center of northern Tanzania, before boarding a flight to Nairobi. Here
you have time for some last-minute shopping and packing before tonight's gala
farewell dinner at one of your hotel's famous restaurants. Celebrate your final
night in Africa with your guide and travel companions, while enjoying a
delicious dinner at this exciting venue.

Depart on Swissair to Zurich, where you transfer to your accommodations. Nearby
