Before we climbed Mt. Hood in February 1997 we were able to spend some time at Smith Rock State Park in Oregon to do some camping and rock climbing.  We camped above the Crooked River and had an excellent view of the southern Cascade.  Fortunately, when we were there, the Hale-Bopp comet was in the northern sky and we got a spectacular view.
